Why transportation matters

Susie* was seven when she disclosed an incident of sexual abuse to her teacher. Her story was reported to the authorities, and Susie and her caregiver were asked to visit the Dr. Bill Lewis Center for Children.

They agreed on a date and time, but gas prices had jumped. Money was already tight and the family could not afford to make the two-hour drive.

Staff at the Lewis Center connected Susie’s family to local resources and a few days later, Susie and her caregiver were able to make it in for a forensic interview.
